Suffixes  


Definition

Concept used in grammar to name the affix added to the end of a Word to change its meaning.

For example:
  • adding the suffix -ter to the adjective hot turns it into the comparative adjective hotter                       
                                   hot -ter > hotter
  • adding the suffix -ly to the adjective quick turns it into the adverb quickly.

                                   quicky-ly > quickly


EXAMPLES:

   - ize/-ise
        idolize/idolise
                                                       like

The addition of a suffix often changes a word from one word class to another. In the table above, the verb like becomes the adjective likeable, the noun idol becomes the verb idolize, and the noun child becomes the adjective childish.
